On Marriage...

Pessimistic Views...

Marriage is a gamble!
Marriage is a punishment;
Marriage is an evil that most can't accept

Optimistic views...

Marriage is a gift of God;
Marriage is a blessing,
Marriage is an employment,
We make the best of it.

Truths:

Marriage is so wonderful;
Marriage is so fulfilling;
Marriage is so wholesome,
Marriage is an endless love,
More priceless than all wealth!

Marriage is a way of life;
Marriage is so natural;
Marriage is the better way,
for two, to reach heaven...

(This poem is a gift to me and Charry from our friend, Munik. Thank you!)

If Tomorrow Never Comes

This morning I received a "wierd" text message.

It's "wierd" in a sort of way because it came from a friend.  He told me in his text message that "even though I may not know it, he loved me."

Ha?!

I scrolled back to confirm...  Yup, it came from him alright.

Hmmm, perhaps it's a mis-sent message?  Or was my friend following Rustom Padilla in his footsteps?

I was about to text him back when I received another text message.  This time it came from his wife and she had the same message for me...  "even though I may not know it, she loved me."

Hehehe, ok, ok...  I think this is a season of loving eh?

So what's with this people?  Are they attending some kind of retreat in a far flung  boondock out there?

I'm not texting back until I found out.  ;-)

Anyway, here's a poem that's fit for this occassion...

IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES

If I knew it would be the last time
that I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute or two
to stop and say I love you,
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything right.

There will always be another day
to say our I love you's,
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do's?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget,

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance you get
to hold your loved one tight..

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear,

Take time to say "I'm sorry, please forgive me,"
"thank you" or "it's okay".
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today

Forks in the Road

(Left mind rules over the right mind... this is the result, hehehe)

From time to time, the path ahead divides in two, and we have to face that rarely-simple, usually-procrastinated and uniquely-excruciating decision... this way or that.  Being a bit of a fence rider and a person who generally prefers living in shades of gray, I can't imagine any situation I'd rather avoid. But try as I might, those moments still come, inevitably.

It was easy when I was younger.  I just deferred as long as I could, then I took the easiest course.  I went with the flow, the path of least resistance.

        So simple.

So what if that easy choice could lead to years of gnawing dissatisfaction which might then flower into outright depression?  Who cared if it might ultimately require painful, drawn-out backtracking?  At least the initial way was easy.

Nowadays, it's agony.  The choice at the fork never seems easy any more.  I suppose that's one of the curses of growing older.  I don't have the comfortable luxuries of ignorance and inexperience to fall back upon.  Things are beginning to look eerily familiar, and patterns that have formed over the course of my life are starting to become obvious.  Not to imply that a matured clarity has taken the place of youthful blindness...  I'm just as capable of self-deception now as I've ever been.  If anything, I might be better at it, as my rationalizations become ever more convincing and better argued.

        It's all so exhausting...

        I'll move on.

Splish Splash

Shyly, he asked her if she would like to make a trip with him to his hometown, just a short drive away from Manila.  They have only dated three times and she was a bit apprehensive about coming along.  She knew she could trust him... he was so comfortable to be with, always smiling and making her laugh even at the smallest of things and she felt as if she had known him for a much longer time.

And so without thinking further, she agreed.

Along the way, he kept telling her of this special place in his hometown where he went to everytime he needed to think or have time for himself.  From the way he told of that special place, he seemed really very excited.  And his excitement was rubbing off on her... her heart started beat faster in anticipation of seeing this "special place".

They arrived at his hometown and he excitedly showed her around the place, starting from the park, to the municipal hall, to the church and all the way to the market where she enjoyed tasting the native delicacies and buying some gifts to bring to her siblings back home.  He showed her all there was to see... except this special place.

Finally on the last night that they were there, he told her to get dressed.  He took her down to the edge of town where the park was.  At first it didn't seem like a special place to her.  All she saw were some bushes and some small plants and some big boulders strewn about.

He asked her to get out of the car and she did.  He took her hand and slowly they walked down a path with only the lights from the car showing them the way.  After all it was almost midnight.  She wondered why he asked her to get dressed when it seemed as if they were going for a hike.  Her body tensed at the thought of what he might do to her in the woods.  It was very dark.  She didn't know anybody in town and she was very far away from home.  She couldn't readily call for help if something bad happened to her.  In her excitement to get dressed, she even forgot to bring her cellphone along.

She started sweating from mixed feelings of excitement and fear.  She didn't know where she was being led to.  They continued walking further.  He walked her up over a hill and through some thick trees.  She could hear a river up ahead.  The continued walking down the hill to the river and to a tiny little peninsula that stuck out into the water.  There they stood on the tiny peninsula with the water surrounding them, the little eddies of current almost splashing water at their feet.  The full moon and the stars were in place above them, making the water glisten and shine.

Slowly, he faced her.  He took her hands in his, bent down on one knee and looked her up in the eyes, the light from the moon illuminating his face.  He took a deep breath and with the fervent passion that only a person in love can say, he breathed out her name and asked her to marry him.

It was just too perfect for her... the moon, the stars, the little peninsula, with the trees and the water all around them.  A tear broke out from each of her eyes.  She was completely overwhelmed... and without thinking she said yes.

She wrapped her arms around him and they shared the biggest kiss they had ever had.

It was such a perfect moment..... until they fell in the river.

They were embraced and they both lost their footing, falling together into the water, making a very big splash and laughing like little children as they tried to "save" each other.

The moon, the stars, the river and the trees all shared in their laughter and joy.

The Magic and the Mystery...

Love is like magic
And it always will be.
For love still remains
Life's sweet mystery!!

  Love works in ways
That are wondrous and strange
And there's nothing in life
That love cannot change!!

  Love can transform
The most commonplace
Into beauty and splendor
And sweetness and grace.

  Love is unselfish,
Understanding and kind,
For it sees with its heart
And not with its mind!!

  Love is the answer
That everyone seeks...
Love is the language,
That every heart speaks.

  Love can't be bought,
It is priceless and free,
Love, like pure magic,
Is life's sweet mystery!!

Finding Wings

I first read Trina Paulus' book, "Hope for the Flowers" back in High School.  It is a story about a caterpillar named Stripe.  The story had no impact on me back then; I just read it because it was required reading for our English class... And so I went on to college, graduated, got a job and started working.  It was then that I stumbled upon the book again inside National Bookstore.  I flipped through the pages, started reading and before I knew it, I had finished the book right there and then, right in front of the "No Private Reading" sign inside the store.

I couldn't get enough of the book and so I bought a copy for my own even though I had already read it from cover to cover.  (And that was how the name "Pepperstripe" came to be.)

        Stripe's story goes like this:

Media_httppepperstrip_bzqch

Stripe was born a tiny striped caterpillar who loved to crawl around and eat leaves.  He became bored with just crawling around in a field. One day, when he was looking off in the distance, he saw a pillar going up into the sky. He thought, "I wonder what that is." He crawled toward the pillar, and saw that it was a pillar of caterpillars climbing upward. He couldn't see the top of the pillar because it went up into a cloud. He thought, "Maybe that's what caterpillars are supposed to do--climb caterpillar pillars." He got on the caterpillar pillar and started to climb up. The only way to do that was to step on other caterpillars' heads, so he kept pushing his way up. Every once in a while, he would ask another caterpillar, "What is at the top of the pillar?" They all said, "We don't know, but everyone is going up there, so it must be something important."

On his way up, he stepped on the head of a little yellow caterpillar that was very pretty. He felt bad about that, and did something someone isn't supposed to do when he is stepping on others' heads--he looked her in the eye. He thought, "She's a lovely little caterpillar." He said to her, "Maybe it would be better not to climb this caterpillar pillar, but to go back to the field and just hug a lot." The two of them worked their way down the caterpillar pillar into the field, and hugged a lot. After a while, hugging got a little boring, and Stripe said, "I'm going to go back up the caterpillar pillar and see what's up there." She said, I can't go back up that," so Stripe left her.

Lonely, the pretty yellow caterpillar was crawling around in a field when she saw something funny hanging from a branch. It was half of a little case and half of a caterpillar. She said to the caterpillar, "What are you doing?" He said, "I'm spinning a cocoon." She asked, "Why are you doing that?" The caterpillar said, "Because I'm going to die." She said, "Why do you want to die?" He said, "Because if I die, I will be born again as a butterfly." She said, "Are you sure? Suppose you aren't born as a butterfly?" He said, "I will become born again as a butterfly, because that's what caterpillars are made to be. But they have to die first."

She thought about that for a long time, because doing that was a big decision. Finally, she decided she'd be willing to die and be born as a butterfly. She realized that if she did that, she wouldn't have to climb the caterpillar pillar; she could fly over the top and look down to see what was up there. She spun a cocoon and died, and became born as a butterfly. So she flew over to the caterpillar pillar and found Stripe, very close to the top of the pillar, almost about to find out what was at the top.

Do you know what happened when a caterpillar got to the top? A caterpillar underneath him would push him off, making him fall all the way to the bottom of the pillar and die. But before that happened to Stripe, she rescued him. Later on, Stripe spun a cocoon and became a butterfly too.

Once again, there was hope for the flowers...

What does that story say?  It says that if you're willing to die, you can be born again into a better life.  For two caterpillars, we all know, surrendering to the cocoon is the only way to finally fly.  For us humans, surrendering to the Lord and allowing Him to fulfill His purpose for us in our lives is the only way to finally fly -- to have eternal life with Him.

That is His purpose for us...

If you want to read the longer version (full text) of the story, click here. Or better yet, buy a copy of the book from National Bookstore and experience the fun reading it with the illustrations and all.

The Mercenary

I sought to change the world

to change my life

I felt happy and contented

but it wasn't enough... something's amiss

so I chose to bare my thoughts

for it would be unfair to keep it trapped

to me and to someone that matters

and once those words were spoken

the world would never be the same again

there's no turning back

there's no friendship to turn back on

it's only what remains ahead that matters

an unknown territory

definitely no turning back

the world has changed

that's what I call... life.

it's not for me anymore.

shout it out, geronimo!

make it happen.

A Silly Smile

Media_httppepperstrip_fipfa

Just can't help smiling lately, though for no particular reason.  So here's a silly letter of silly proportions sent to a silly no one in particular.

----------------------------

Hey friend,

Lately I noticed you've been smiling a lot.

That silly little smile on your face... that makes people wonder what's on your mind. Somebody commented that it has been a long time since you smiled so much.

Someone has mentioned the fact that life is beautiful. That's one reason to smile.

But I don't think you buy that.

'Cause you have a perfect-melancholy temperament and melancholics aren't supposed to think "life is beautiful" thoughts.

And I say "nothing's perfect."  You don't buy that too.

Perhaps this friend of yours is one reason you are smiling.  I know.  'Cause with all that have gone wrong,  your friend's comments have always been, with all due respect, lame.  And that makes you wanna just smack your friend in the face and go what-kind-of-idiot-says-such-lame-things on and on.

But hey, that never fails to put a smirk on your face.

And you even said your friend should bloody hell find some good partner, 'cause it's killing you seeing your friend like that...  Like a small little pussycat without the plate of milk.  Oh well, I don't know.

Someday something's gonna wipe that silly smile off your face. And when that day comes, good Lord, please, please may this friend of yours give you some more of those silly comments.

You could smack your friend in the face...

And that would put that silly little smile back on your face again.

Fly, balloon, fly

I let go of the string
Fly, balloon, fly
Rise up in a whisper
To greet the sky

A wave of my hand
Bids the balloon goodbye
Never looking back
Flying up on high

Fly up and fly free
A little speck to the eye
Ride the mighty winds
Don't ever be shy

Go on and fly higher
Past the clouds and birds
A little wish I have
Never forget my words

For you are made to fly
And you are made to be free
Take my heart up high
So that I may see.

A little bit of balloon trivia:

* Ballons are made from latex rich fluids harvested fram the bark of the Hevea brasilliensis, or Brazilian rubber trees.

* An 11-inch helium balloon can be expected to remain lighter than air for only 12-16 hours.  This is because helium molecules are small enough to escape through the molecular "holes" in the latex.

* Helium is used to inflate balloons because hydrogen, another "lighter-than-air" gas, is combustible. (I remember a friend who burned his hair and eyebrows when the cigarette he was smoking got too close to one of these hydrogen-balloons. Hahaha, he looked awfully wierd after that)

* Free floating balloons (those released in the air) pose no ecological hazards while floating free.

* Latex balloons pose no knows threat to aircraft (i.e. getting sucked into the airplane turbine and getting entangled inside) or to human dwellings.

* An 11-inch helium should rise at a rate of 5-6 feet per second reaching an altitude of 28,000 feet after about 1.5 hours.  (Hmmm.... what if I tie myself to a hundred balloons so that I can fly over Mt. Everest?)

* Over 95% of released helium balloons float upward over hours until an altitude of about five miles.  At this altitude the latex is brittle due to the cold.  Stretched to the breaking point, the balloon bursts into multiple broken fragments.  (Oops, so much for that Mt. Everest balloon flight fantasy)

Media_httppepperstrip_zfwba

* There are no knows cases of reported injuries due to falling balloon fragments.

* Balloons are composed of latex taken from rubber trees.  It is not surprising that they will degrade at the same rate as leaves and faster than small wood chips.

* In 1997, Discovery Channel presented a case of intestinal obsruction in a whale that has ingested a balloon.  The whale was treated successfully and released.

Also In 1997, a man successfully flew in a garden chair strapped to 45 helium-filled balloons.

Here's his funny story ;-)

The Cliff

The soles of their bare feet are cut and bruised as they climb along the cliff's edge.  Somehow, she decided that it was better to take her shoes off so she that can firmly grasp a foothold along the narrow trail that led to the top.  His feet are now hurting and he regretted having to take off his shoes as she had done.  He could barely see the footpath in the dark and cloudy night, being guided only by the white dress that she wore as she clambered ahead.

She stood along the cliffs edge and stared at the vast blackness of ocean before her, reveling at its infinite emptiness and enthralled by the thunderous sound of waves crashing upon the rocky shoreline below.  He was gasping for breath.  She wasn’t.  The wind kisses their faces as they hold each other's hands.

Slowly he moves his hand up to her face to wipe away a tear.  As she lifts her head to look up at him, a faint smile draws upon her face, highlighting her beauty amidst the strong wind blowing.  His eyes had adjusted to the darkness now and he could only marvel at her innate loveliness as she smiled.

She said to him, "You don't have to go with me.  I just need to..."

Her words were cut short as he raised his finger against her lips.  "Shhh" he said.  "We've talked about this so many times already.  You know how much I love you..."

It was her turn to raise her finger to his lips, gazing intently as his eyes.  She drew his head close to her and planted a kiss on his lips.  For what seems like an eternity, they gazed into each other's eyes, hugging each other as the wind blew stronger.

"I love you", she said.  He hugs her close.

A big gust of wind startles them and they momentarily lose their balance.  She holds him tight.  "Ready?" she said.  He looks at her and nods.

The sky begins to weep.  They step forward.

And the three of them plunge into eternity.

Roses are Red

Media_httppepperstrip_ceefa

Roses are RED... or white, yellow, orange, purple, pink, or peach.  I should know - my uncle has a rose garden right in our own frontyard that I used to pass by everyday when I go out of our house in Baguio.

But a blue rose???  Nope! I've never seen one in my life.  An article in Global-Garden Australia explains why the blue rose remains very elusive.

Media_httppepperstrip_acrac

I've heard some florists mention that a blue rose can be "artificially" produced by cutting off a white rose and dipping its stem in water tainted with blue ink.

I've only recently discovered that scientists were able to genetically produce and grow a blue rose.

So what do the rose's color mean anyway when given to another person?

Purple roses
stand for enhancement, magnification, opulence, majesty and glory and means I will always love you.

Orange roses indicate enthusiasm, desire and fascination. The orange rose says, "I am proud of you!"

Peach roses signify desire, anticipation, sincere appreciation and optimism for the future. Pale peach roses are a symbol of modesty.

Pink roses stand for elegance, gracefulness, refinement, gentility, style and poetic romance but are combined with fun and lightheartedness.

Red roses symbolize romance, beauty, respect, courage, passionate love and unity and are the most popular of all roses.

White roses represent unity, loyalty, reverence, humility, love stronger than death, sincerity, purity, silence and innocence as well as youthfulness.

Yellow roses signify strong feelings of pure joy, gladness, happiness and friendship, but were once used to convey jealousy.

Rosebuds symbolize beauty, youth and a heart innocent of love or: “You are young and beautiful.”

It is said that blue roses stand for fantasies, hoping for miracles, new opportunities and possibilities.

And the meaning of roses in mixed colors - "you're everything to me". A mixed-color bouquet carries all of the meanings of each individual rose.

So there it is, all the meanings, (well most of them) of the color of roses!

Butterfly Butterfly Fly Away...

"Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
                                Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly butterfly"

Hmmm... this sounds deceptively like my favorite butterfly song:

                                Fly, Fly, Fly, the Butterfly
In the garden is flying high
In the meadow is flying low
                                Fly, Fly, Fly, the Butterfly.

Fly low, Fly high.......

And another...

Great things come in threes...  This is the third of the poem series :)

----------------------

IF
by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And—which is more—you'll be a Man, my son!

~

Another one

Here's another...
---------------------

INVICTUS
by William Ernest Henley. 1849–1903

Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be
for my unconquerable soul

In the felt clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud
Beneath the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed

Beyond this point of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid

It matters not how straight the gate
How charged with punishments the scroll
I AM THE MASTER OF MY FATE
I AM THE CAPTAIN OF MY SOUL.

First!

...Trying first to get comfortable with Friendster's BLOG feature.  I'll start with a poem, this one has been etched in my mind for so long, i can even recite it backwards, lol :D

---------------

DON'T QUIT

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit --
Rest if you must but don't quit!

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out,
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is farther than it seems,
to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have won the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Sucess if failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the coulds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
You may be near when it seems afar,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you musn't quit.

~
