Two Become One

Image001

Finally, I’ve successfully mirrored my Posterous blog to my Wordpress blog using Wordpress’ “import” feature. My blog now exists in two different sites.

I’ve also configured Posterous to autopost to Wordpress so all posts to my Posterous blog will get posted automatically to my Wordpress blog. Posterous will still be my publishing platform of choice due to its nifty email feature (not that Wordpress does not have this feature, but I find Posterous to be more user friendly and I can also selectively post to Posterous only, or include autoposting to Wordpress, Twitter, and even Facebook. How’s that for “nifty”?)

The Wordpress theme also needs some major tweaking, but I’d leave it as is for now until I find time to tweak it to my liking.

I Support Free Knowledge

Image001

The English site of one of my favorite websites, Wikipedia, went black today to raise awareness to, and to protest against new legislations being considered by the US Congress that could fatally damage the free and open Internet as we know it today.

These new legislations are known as the “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA) and the “PROTECT IP Act” (PIPA).  Both bills are advertised as helping to combat online piracy and protect internet users. The actual content contained within the two bills however, is rather frightening, as they could be used to build a framework for future restrictions and suppression.

The full version can be daunting to read but there is an unabridged version written by Mashable.com that serves as a good translation.

Learn about these bills from Wikipedia itself: SOPA and PIPA

Social Media Security: Dont Compromise Yourself

Are you giving away too much information about yourself to help criminals in their activities?  Keep this in mind the next time you tweet or update your Facebook status about your vacation plans or whereabouts.

Five Practical Steps to Improving your Home's "Social" Security:

  1. Set your Facebook privacy settings to allow only your friends to see your content.

  2. Only add actual friends into your network.

  3. Refrain from announcing that you will be out of town for an extended period of time.

  4. Don't post photos that reveal your address or landmarks near your home.

  5. Avoid posting photos of expensive items in your home.

Five Practical Steps to a Secure Home:

  1. Always make your home look occupied.

  2. Always lock your doors when you leave.

  3. Never leave a secret key hidden under your doormat - burglars know exactly where to look.

  4. take inventory of your valuable possessions, including photos, descriptions of each item and the date it was purchased, so that you can be properly reimbursed by your insurance company.

  5. Make sure your homeowner's or renter's insurance coverage is sufficient given the total value of your possessions.

The infographic below shows details on the role of social media in your security and how to protect yourself.
